Notifying Your Landlord: What You Need to Know

If you’re currently renting, it’s time to notify your landlord that you’ll be moving out. The notice period required depends on your lease terms and state rental laws, so it's important to review both before proceeding.

Check Your Local Rental Laws:
New Jersey Landlord-Tenant Handbook
Philadelphia Landlord-Tenant Handbook

Your lease agreement will specify the required notice period, but here are the general guidelines:

Month-to-Month Lease: Typically requires 30 days’ notice before moving out.
Annual Lease: Usually requires 60 days’ notice before the lease term ends.

For example, if your lease ends on October 1, you should inform your landlord by August 1 whether you plan to renew or move.

What If Your Lease Doesn’t End for Several Months?

If your lease extends beyond your home purchase timeline, here are a few options to consider:

Adjusting Your Closing Date – We can explore the possibility of pushing your home’s closing date closer to your lease expiration to minimize overlap. If this is an option you’d like to consider, let us know as soon as possible.

Maintaining Both Residences Temporarily – Some buyers choose to keep their rental for a short period after closing, allowing for a stress-free move with extra time to transition. However, this means covering both your monthly rent and mortgage until your lease ends.
